Old Macs run Unix too!

While MacOSX is Unix-based, it only runs on the newest of Macs (and sometimes x86 PCs too but that’s another story).  However, NetBSD runs fine on old 68k Macs.  Take for example my Performa 450 (LCIII).  I wrote a page on my website about how I installed NetBSD on it.  Well, that was a long time ago…  But the other day, I took it down from it’s holding place just to see if it still worked.  Apparently, it did.  However, the 1 gB hard drive that I had installed in there (ooh, so much space) was extremely loud and made an awful screeching sound.  This was most likely due to the fact that the bearings were probably gone.  I tried to replace it with another 1 gig hard drive that I had.  It was labelled the same (Quantum Fireball series) and had the same space, functions, and everything else, but the connector was slightly different.  So then I dug out the 125 mB drive that originally came with my Performa 450.  It was nice and quiet, but since the hard drive was so small, I could only install the base NetBSD system.  The reason why I wanted things quiet is because I have always wanted a small, lightweight server that is useful for testing purposes.  Oh well, after the install, there was only about 50 mB of space left and I was tired, so I stopped.  Maybe if I can find another 1 gig hard drive that isn’t so noisy, I could replace it and put up my little server.

Amazing, I’ve Posted for how many Consecutive Days?

I don’t plan on posting every day, but I feel like posting something today to test some new plugins I installed. First of all, the fact that this blog sort of looks like the iPodLinux Dev Blog is purely coincidental.

Secondly, MoPiD 1.23 was released. I finally fixed the FPS bug. It seems as though I forgot that I was dealing with strings when I ran the validator to see if the value was appropriate. So, it would always say that the value was wrong and then instruct Mencoder to encode at 15 FPS. Someone on the iPodLinux forums suggested something interesting. If I added an option for mono sound instead of the default stereo, it would cut the size of the resulting file down by a great deal. I liked this idea and I think I may release version 1.3 of MoPiD with this option. MoPiD2 development has stalled because I just have so much work to do. It requires a lot of patience to achieve what I want to, so I may have to wait until the summer when I will have some more time.  I’m still developing a GUI for it.  I need to design a highly portable GUI that works across all platforms and is small.

And finally, I word about the latest game I have found, GunZ International Edition.  This is a fun 3D third person game where you are looking right behind your character (in the style of Max Payne, I am told).  The graphics are pretty good if  you set them to the highest quality.  The sound is reflective of where you are located, so you can hear where shots are coming from if you have headphones on.  Gameplay is a cross between your standard shooter and the Matrix.  You can run up and along walls, do combos, and have a huge selection of guns and swords to choose from.  The more kills you get, the more experience and money you get to be able to purchase better armor and weapons.  It’s quite a fun game.  However, it’s a pain to set up; you’ll probably experience a lot of network problems.  And there’s the fact that it keeps giving my nVidia GeForce 4 MX chip some kind of problem such that I get a BSoD every once in a while.  But other than that, it’s quite a fun game!

Theme Changed.

All that AJAX was slowing the blog down severely and considering that I want to keep this blog simple, I don’t think I’ll need it. It was a very nice theme. However, I have decided to go with EastView, a beautiful theme from http://www.kaushalsheth.com/themes. I modified the header picture, obviously, and changed some of the colors around to make it look a bit less dark. The theme is nice and simple in my opinion. Also, this is about the fifth time I’ve remade that header picture.

Pika!

First Post

Okay,  I decided to set up a blog after all.  However, it’s not going to be a news blog as I had originally planned it to be.  I’ve left that to the job of PyNews, my trusted program.  Although it’s still a bit buggy, it will do the job fine.  I have set up this small blog as a collection of some random thoughts, code snippets, graphic designs, etc.  Basically, it’s a blog filled with small tests that are too simple to be listed in my website, a "JoeyJWC Labs" if you will.  I’ll start out by describing the blog’s style.

Binary Blue was a beautiful style because it had a great deal of AJAX support and I love AJAX.  However, the blue color was a bit intense for my liking, so I changed it to more of the traditional colors that are common to the version 5 design of my website, gray.  I spent a bit of time remaking all of the gradients and completely redesigned the logo.  I kept some of the blue in there because I felt that it provided a nice accent.  So that’s basically my theme, simple, but effective.  Kind of like the stuff I plan to put here, huh?  Well, maybe not the effective part, but still…

Anyways, enjoy.  The version 5 layout will be done soon enough now.  Just a few more pages to convert.
