I randomly decided to burn through a CD case yesterday, and I discovered that upon doing so, this awesome effect is produced:

In other news, I’m starting to use Opera more and more lately. I’m tired of Firefox hanging constantly when I type an address in the bar. Opera is about as fast in terms of rendering, but is much more responsive. Plus, it actually integrates with QT4, so it looks like the rest of my desktop (GTK’s QT emulation themes do not like dark color schemes). I still have to iron out a few bugs with the color theme; I have the problem of white text on white backgrounds a lot because the skin assumes that your default system text color is black.
I’m using a development snapshot of Opera 10 right now. It works beautifully, but definitely has a bunch of bugs that need to be ironed out. If I decide to switch to Opera permanently, I will probably go back to a QT4 version of Opera 9. The integrated developer tools are nice, but I think I prefer Firebug, so I’m still using Firefox for web development.
On that note, Admissions is letting me add my CPW schedule filter app to their webpage so that all the 2013 prospectives can use it. I rewrote the entire script (using JQuery now!). It’s all set to go and should be up on the admissions site by early April.
Here are some pictures of my desktop for this month:
Notes:
I do have a dual-monitor setup. The second monitor basically looks just like the first, so I won’t bother wasting bandwidth.
I’m a big fan of KDE 4 as a desktop environment, but some of the details bug me. Plasma seems a little clunky, so I only use the two plasmoids I need most: Notes and Calendar. Aesthetically speaking, I don’t really like having widgets sprawled all over my desktop, especially since my laptop monitor is only 1280×800.
I have spent the past few days building a Conky configuration for myself. I also wrote the weather script (which uses data from a Weather.com XML feed) and the Amarok script (which gets information via DBUS). It’s still a work in progress, though.
My KDE theme is Bespin with a homemade configuration file. The color scheme is a slight modification of my Eclipse color scheme (which has received almost 400 downloads and is one of the top in the in the list!). While Bespin is also a little clunky, the animations are kind of fun.
The transparent background terminal is the XFCE terminal.
Yes, Compiz does work on my machine. I’m not budging from my current (though outdated) X configuration until UXA support has been completely confirmed to be working.
My configuration is definitely far from complete. The desktop image is just a default option in KDE, so that will be the first to change (I have some ideas). I’ve only done a little customization of my BASH shell, so that’s also on the list… So much to do…
